Abstract

The Approach Employed by Imām Ibn Qayyim in His Literary Composition and Research Work. Imām Ibn Qayyim is a reputable jurist, writer, and researcher of the middle ages. This treatise explicates the research approach that he employed in his literary work and research study. Ibn Qayyim is one of those well-known academics who emphasized referring to Qur’ān and Sunnah in matters of differences in either theological (Kalāmī) or jurisprudential (Fiqhī) aspects instead of resorting to some specific school of thought or a sectarian group. Moreover, in case an issue is not explicitly discussed in Qur’ān and Sunnah, then he was of the opinion of referring to the Prophet’s companions (Ṣaḥābah) for its understanding and therefore, considered their opinions to be the authority (Ḥujjah) in such matters.

Similarly, his research approach encompasses almost every aspect of the subject matter in a very systematic manner and thereafter concludes what deems to be a preferable opinion. While employing Istidlāl (induction) and Istinbāṭ (deduction), he significantly brought into consideration the spiritual aspects such as Taqwā (fear of Allāh) and Iḥsān (i.e. perfection in worship) of a conclusion as well along with the grand objectives (Maqāṣid) and wisdom (Ḥikmah) of the Sharī‘ah. He considered the spiritual aspects of a conclusion to be an integral part of the process.
