Abstract
Allah Almighty has blessed the Muslim ummah with the permission to recite Holy Quran in more than one Qira,at, so that it become easy for them to read it without any difficulty. The entire Ummah has been reciting Holy Quran in more than one Quranic Qirat for centuries. Just as the Hafs Riwayat is commonly recited in our subcontinent, reading Quran with many other Qira,at is a common thing in dozens of other countries. Similarly, as here in subcontinent it is very challenging for an ordinary person to read Holy Quran in a Riwayat other than Hafs Riwayat, so the people of other countries have to face a lot of problems in reading Holy Quran in Hafs Riwayat. This is the facility and ease that Allah Almighty has bestowed to His servants. But there has also been a group of people who does not consider more than one Qira,at to be correct. The Mu'tazilites (Mutazila) were the very first to deny the various traditions of reciting Holy Quran and since then this trend has continued and its signs can be traced in the subcontinent as well. Almost all those people who have doubts and questions about the authenticity of the hadith, have denied the permissibility of reciting Holy Quran in more than one recitation. Javed Ahmad Ghamdi also does not acknowledge the existence of different Quranic Qira,at. He says that in the beginning it was allowed to read Holy Quran in more than one Qira,at but later this permission was revoked. In this article, Ghamdi's objections have been analyzed and critically studied. Ghamdi opines that at this point of time, Holy Quran can be read and taught in only one common recitation (Qirat e Aama) and for him Hafs Riwayat is that common and public tradition which should be adopted. A detailed analysis of Ghamdi's objections regarding the abrogation of permission of reciting Holy Quran in more than one Qira,at has been presented.
